MORGAN HILL, Calif. - At least three people are dead after two separate car crashes occurred early Sunday, Morgan Hill authorities said.
The first crash happened around 3 a.m. downtown on Third Street and Monterey Road. It was a single rollover crash, and police said they believe the driver lost control.
Police said their preliminary investigation determined the driver collided with multiple trees and a fire hydrant in the center median. He was declared dead at the scene.
Hours later around 8:45 a.m., a separate collision occurred on Monterey Road near Middle Avenue, near Calderon Tires, officials said.
In that accident, the driver was speeding northbound on Monterey Road and also lost control, and crashed into a car driving southbound on the same road.
Both drivers died at the scene.
"As the holiday season approaches, we at the Morgan Hill Police Department want to remind everyone in our community of the importance of safe driving during this festive time of year. Celebrations, gatherings, and travel can bring joy, but they also bring increased risks on our roads," the Morgan Hill Police Department said.
Officials remind drivers to not drive impaired, but instead designate a sober driver, use a rideshare, or arrange alternate transportation.
Drivers are also reminded to "slow down and stay focused."
"Holiday traffic can be stressful. Obey speed limits, eliminate distractions, and stay alert," officials said. "A few extra minutes of patience can save lives."
