If you see a dog, trapped inside a hot car in California, you can now rescue the dog without worrying about breaking the law.
Over the weekend, Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill makes it legal to smash car windows to rescue animals trapped inside hot cars.
The bill was introduced after several dogs died inside hot cars.
Supporters of the new law say it will help to save many animals.
"People can know they can go and be a Good Samaritan and not have to worry about breaking the law, not have to worry about paying the damages to the broken window, not have to worry about vandalism to the car," said Kevin McCarty, 7th District, Sacramento.
Under the law, the person rescuing an animal must stay at the scene until police get there.
The rescuer cannot take ownership of the animal, even if they suspect it's being neglected.
