Oakland city councilwoman's grandson shot and killed
OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - Oakland City Council President Lynette Gibson McElhaney is mourning the loss of her teenaged grandson.
17-year-old Torian Hughes was gunned down Sunday afternoon near 9th Street and Mandela Parkway, not far from the West Oakland BART Station.
Oakland police say Hughes was with a friend, when two men approached them and started shooting.
No motive was given and the two suspects took off on foot.
Hughes’ friend was not injured in the shooting.
Gibson McElhaney wrote on Facebook about her family’s loss and lamented the senseless violence saying her grandson’s death on Sunday “and the shootings throughout Oakland that followed over the past two days, only strengthen my resolve for eradicating gun violence in our city. None of us, not one of us is immune.”
A GoFundMe page set up for Hughes’ family describes the teen as eccentric, creative and witty.
Family and friends plan to gather near the shooting scene for a vigil to remember Hughes on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
