Oakland named host city for California's 2023 Michelin Guide ceremony
OAKLAND, Calif. - The Michelin Guide names the City of Oakland as the host city for the 2023 Michelin Guide California Ceremony.
The private event will be held July 13 at the Chabot Space + Science Center and will unveil the yearly Michelin Guide selection for California's restaurants with over 200 chefs across to receive "coveted Michelin Stars and other award distinctions."
Tourism board Visit Oakland stated Oakland is not only one of California's most diverse cities, but also one of the top food cities in the country.
"One hundred twenty-five languages are spoken in The Town, and that multicultural mix is strongly represented in the vibrant culinary scene," said Visit Oakland in a statement.
Visit Oakland's president and CEO Peter Gamez said hosting the ceremony brings an opportunity for people to experience Oakland's culinary scene and a "true testament to Oakland's warm, authentic spirit."

Five Oakland restaurants were listed in the Guide in May, bringing the total of Oakland Michelin-recommended restaurants to 20.
"We are thrilled to unveil the 2023 edition of the Michelin Guide California in Oakland," said International Director of the Michelin Guides Gwendal Poullennec. "Oakland and the Bay Area boast a flourishing culinary landscape, and we are excited to hold the ceremony right in the heart of it all! We are eager to celebrate the accomplishments of California’s top restaurant teams."
Restaurants for the Michelin Guide are judged by anonymous inspectors who focus on the quality of products, "harmony of flavors, mastery of cooking techniques," the chef's personality, the menu as a whole, and the consistency between each visit- as the restaurants are inspected multiple times a year.
