Oakland's First Fridays to take 3-month hiatus

Oakland's First Fridays will take a three-month break beginning at the top of 2024.

Organizers for the event announced on Monday that from January through March, there won't be a First Fridays, citing financial constraints.

"The event's success has always depended on the support of local businesses, sponsors, and the dedication of our volunteers, but in recent times we have faced some financial challenges. These challenges have made it difficult for us to continue operating without risking the event's long-term viability," organizers said in a social media post.

The group said it is looking for new sources of funding to keep the vibrant community event going.

The monthly block party has been a gathering place for various artists, performers, and small businesses in Oakland for several years.

The next First Fridays event will happen on Friday, Nov. 4 on Telegraph Avenue, between 22nd and 27th streets.
