One dead, 5 inmates hospitalized in Folsom prison riot

FOLSOM, Calif. (KTVU) – One inmate was dead and five others hospitalized after a riot erupted on the maximum security exercise yard Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

According to the state department of corrections, the inmates were armed with primate weapons fashioned by them out of common jail materials.

At approximately 12:55 p.m., the inmates began fighting in the exercise yards.

Guards quickly moved in and broke up the melee using pepper spray and warning shots.

Prison officials said numerous inmates were injured with five being transported to the hospital with serious stab wounds.

No prison personnel were injured in the riot.

The prison was placed on lockdown as officials investigate the incident.

The name of the dead inmate has not been released.
