SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU) - A 25-year-old woman died in a car crash at Mineta San Jose International Airport on Wednesday morning. Police said five other people including an infant were also injured in that crash. Police say speed played a role.
“Slow down,” said Russ Myers who is traveling from Denver. “You got to make it to where you are going. It's more important than this. It's just really sad.”
Around 10:30 a.m., authorities said the woman was driving solo in a red Pontiac heading southbound near the airport's Terminal B parking garage. As she was driving down a bypass road, her car crashed into a silver SUV in another lane attempting to make a left turn into that garage.
“Preliminary investigation and after talking to investigators here at the scene is the red car was possibly driving at a high rate of speed when it struck the SUV,” said Officer Albert Morales of San Jose Police.
The speed limit is 25 miles per hour. Police said it’s unclear how fast she was going. However, the impact forced the SUV to the curb, where it was seen facing the opposite direction.
Five people in the SUV including an infant were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before at an airport,” said Alex Roloff of Monterey. “Most of the time people are slow. People are distracted picking someone up. They are late to get to their flight.”
It’s the first thing many travelers heading out of the airport encountered. Roloff who is traveling with his son said he's thankful no pedestrians were hit.
“I’ve got a six-year-old boy and he thinks it's safe to cross through the intersection,” said Roloff. “When it’s green, this is a perfect way of showing you got to pay attention and just because it's green doesn't mean you can go.”
Police are now reviewing surveillance video to pinpoint exactly what happened. There were no impacts to flights.
