SAN JOSE, Calif. - A man and a woman were shot near the San Jose State University campus on Monday morning.
The woman is expected to be OK, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
"We're still processing evidence, collecting evidence and going through victim and witness statements that are available to us," said Steve Aponte, spokesperson with San Jose police.
This death marks the 10th homicide of 2022 for San Jose.
The shooting occurred about 3 a.m. on the corner of 10th and San Salvador streets in downtown – on the east side of the university.
Police were congregated in the parking lot of a nearby church; it wasn't immediately clear why.
A man who lives across the street said police came knocking on his door about 4 a.m. because they noticed he had cameras in front of his house.
He said he knows the woman who was hurt.

"She's a nice woman," Casey Hamblin said. "It's sad. It's a presence going on in our city."
The scene is just down the block from the scene of two shootings less than two months ago, including a homicide and the case when an officer shot K'aun Green who said he was trying to break up a brawl inside La Victoria.
Green confiscated a gun from the fight before police mistakenly took him for the suspect and shot him four times.
"There's no ongoing threat of some stranger going out and committing these crimes," said Aponte. "Although it's a highly dense neighborhood that we have seen in the past many crimes have occurred, it's still very early on in the investigation." Aponte would not confirm any rumors that the shooting was related to domestic violence.
"Haven't we had enough of this? We've had enough of this. It's gotta stop," said resident, Sarah Sherwood. "I think we have a mental health problem. And not just here in the Bay Area, but all over the nation."
Detectives are canvassing the area for surveillance video and witnesses.
