Woman killed, fiancé injured in Pittsburg crash involving fleeing driver

The family of a 22-year-old woman is mourning her death after the car she and her fiancé were in was struck by a suspect fleeing from California Highway Patrol officers in Pittsburg over the weekend.

‘A mom to everyone’

What they're saying:

"She was a mom to everyone. It's a shame what really happened. Tragic. Not words to explain it," Ricky John, a relative of the victim, said.

The woman's children and grandchildren were inside the house and saw the scene in their front yard along Main Street.

"Seconds afterwards we heard the impact, the family ran out, kids ran out, the son, saw a little bit of the incident and took the babies, took them back in the house," John said. "It was too brutal."

Main Street was shut down for several hours while police were on scene investigating. Authorities said the driver was heading north when it crashed into the woman who was walking in the same direction.

Police said the driver originally left the scene and went home after the crash, but voluntarily returned.

"A component of the initial investigation suggested a medical impairment could have been a factor in the collision," the Oakley Police Department said in a statement. "Additional and intensive investigation still needs to occur before any final determinations can be made."

Police said part of their investigation will be determining if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

The family said their home surveillance cameras showed the impact of the crash.

"[The] guy hit her from the back, doing about 60 [mph,]" John said. "It's a shame what took place. I'd like to know what was going through the driver's head at the time. Looks like he swerved, hit her."

In a statement, police offered their sympathy.

"The members of the Oakley Police Department are especially aware of the sensitivities of this tragic incident. The Department extends its sincerest condolences to the family," Police Chief Paul Beard said.

Officials noted the driver's car is now in police custody. The driver was taken to the hospital, but is not being held on charges at this time.
