Police shoots allegedly armed suspect, standoff ensues in Oakland apt.

An Oakland police sergeant reportedly shot an allegedly armed man, who eventually barricaded himself in an apartment before his surrender, authorities said.

The situation unfolded in the 6600 block of MacArthur Boulevard around 5:10 a.m. Authorities said a police sergeant saw a man firing a rifle. The sergeant chased after the suspect and fired his gun during this time.

Despite being struck, the suspect, who was not named, was able to barricade himself in a nearby apartment and a "lengthy" standoff ensued, according to Oakland police. Other officers responded to the scene during this time.

Deadly end to 2024 in Oakland despite overall homicide drop

The last day of 2024 and the first day of the new year were wracked with deadly violence in Oakland despite an overall homicide and crime drop that city leaders had touted the day before. Three were killed on New Year's Eve and two on New Year's Day.

Eventually, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. He was taken to a local hospital and was last listed in stable condition, officials said.

A gun was also found in the area, according to officials.

Because it was an officer-involved shooting, the officer was put on paid administrative leave and the shooting will be investigated by the department's internal accountability office and the Community Police Review Agency.
