Pregnant woman killed in Gilroy New Year's Day crash identified
A pregnant woman killed in a car crash on New Year’s Day has been identified as 29-year-old Rachel Marie Gonzalez Gallegos of Gilroy. Her uncle says Gallegos was in the car with her husband and young son when the crash happened.
"There’s an intersection right there, like a T. So, if you don’t pay attention or whatever, you can just go straight," said Ruben Gonzalez, a resident of Gilroy.
Gonzalez says the intersection of Leavesley Road and New Avenue can be dangerous, especially if you’re not paying attention. He says sometimes there can be heavy traffic on Leavesley, where Gallegos lost her life in a car crash on New Year’s Day.
"I live on 10th Street too many years and it can take about 10 minutes from the high school to the outlets. Now it takes like a half hour to get through there. It’s too much traffic," said Gonzalez.
According to California Highway Patrol, Gallegos was riding in a 2021 Chevy SUV driven by her husband Gonzalez Mora, when the SUV was hit head-on around 6:35 pm. CHP says the 50-year-old driver, only identified as Mr. Temores, was allegedly speeding eastbound on Leavesley when his GMC truck veered into oncoming traffic. Temores hit Mora’s SUV and another driver, identified as 34-year-old Mr. Tobar.
David Gallegos, who says he’s Rachel’s uncle, posted this message on social media, saying in part:
"We heard news we never expect to hear, no one should outlive their children. An accident took my niece, a soon to be mother of two, from us yesterday," said Gallegos.
"People drive quickly on that road but it’s not overly crowded. I never thought it be dangerous. It’d be nice to have a stop light there possibly," said Tyler Luht, a Gilroy resident
It’s still unclear if her husband, son, or the 3rd driver sustained any injuries. Temores was also booked into Santa Clara County Jail without bail.
There’s a GoFundMe account for the family.
