President Obama designating national monument on Equal Pay Day
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KTVU) - President Obama is marking Equal Pay day today, by designating a new national monument in Washington, D.C., at a home that has been central to the women's rights movement.
It's the new Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument.
Alva Belmont and Alice Paul were figures in the women's rights and suffrage movements.
The White House says President Obama has made equal pay for women a top priority, including signing his first piece of legislation as president - the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
Bay Area high tech companies say the salaries of male and female employees who perform the same jobs or similar tasks, are paid equally.
Companies include Facebook, Intel and Microsoft.
Microsoft announced that for every dollar earned by men, its women employees in the U.S. earn 99.8-cents at the same job title and level.
