San Bruno teen severely injured in collision with garbage truck
The family of a 13-year-old Peninsula teenager says he will be hospitalized for weeks due to injuries suffered after he collided with a garbage truck.
SAN BRUNO, Calif. - A Peninsula teenager is recovering from serious injuries at a local hospital after colliding with a garbage truck while riding a scooter.
Family members identified the injured boy as Kayo Amed, 13. They said his injuries are substantial, and he will likely be hospitalized for weeks.
Surveillance video
What we know:
Home surveillance video showed the moments just before the crash on Thursday afternoon in San Bruno. Kayo was riding his scooter in the area of Niles and Chestnut avenues. As he steered his scooter down the hill on the right side of the street, he collided with a Recology refuse collection truck as the vehicle was backing up.
"The Recology truck backed up, and I saw the impact of the person rolling under the truck," said one neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous. "It appeared he was injured, and I called 911... I feel terrible."
When first responders arrived at the scene, they performed lifesaving care until Kayo could be removed from under the truck. After he was removed, he was rushed to a nearby hospital.
"You could see the kid was underneath the garbage truck. He was just lying there, and they were just trying to help him out," said Alex Nol, who was part of a construction team doing sidewalk repairs at the intersection before the accident.
On his way home
What they're saying:
Police officials said Kayo is a student at nearby Parkside Intermediate School and was on his way home when the accident occurred.
School officials said their community of students and parents were notified, and grief counselors were on campus Friday.
Recology said in a statement, "Our hearts are with the young student and their family, and we hope for a full and speedy recovery. Safety is our top priority, and we are fully cooperating with the authorities as they investigate this incident."
San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa, who is on the county's transportation commission, also expressed his sympathies.
"My heart and sympathies go out to the family and then also to the driver. This is such a traumatic incident," he said.
Some neighbors and witnesses said they would carry the haunting sights and sounds with them.
"I don't think any parent — I'm a parent — I don't think any parent wants to find anything like that," said Nol.
San Bruno police are analyzing video from surveillance cameras and have not yet completed the accident report.
