In San Francisco, Eagles and Chiefs fans have their own bars
Sunny Super Bowl Sunday
Bundle up Sunday morning. Most of the Bay Area will start off the day in the chilly 30s. Mostly sunny skies will highlight the afternoon forecast. Our break in the rain continues into early next week. We are tracking rain chances as early as Wednesday. Have a great Super Bowl Sunday! -Mark
SAN FRANCISCO - While the bars in New Orleans, Kansas City and Philadelphia are still packed, San Francisco had a busy, but not bustling Saturday night. A bar is a bar except on NFL days when some bars become strictly partisan, especially for this game.
In a city with many transplants, many die-hard 49er bars also adopt other major sports team fans, such as the Northstar Café, which also prides itself on being a Philadelphia Eagles' nest.
"Any bar in the city, a neighborhood bar wants to catch on to any NFL team. So it's great for business and the customers asked me to make it an Eagles bar," said Northstar Café owner Mark Jennings.
The customers love it.
"It's terrifically exciting. It's magical. That's why I frequent this place, Northstar, North Beach. If you're a Philles, Flyers, Eagles fan, whatever it is, come on down. They'll treat you right. They'll treat you like family," said Eagles fan Adam Segall.
"It's crowded, great energy. People really show out for the birds and, of course, being the biggest game of the year, it's a match made in heaven. Can't wait to get that win," said Eagles fan Matt Hyman.
The aptly named Chief Sullivan's bar prides itself on being a Kansas City Chiefs bar as well as Notre Dame.
"We are definitely expecting it to be Chiefsville tomorrow. We are already pretty much sold out of space, including bar space. So it seems fitting to have another team, other than the Niners, and it coincides with the name of the bar," said Panda, the manager of Chief Sullivan's.
Though we found no Chiefs fans Saturday evening, on Sunday many other places will be Superbowl West.
"I think it's like the camaraderie; the energy of being around a whole lot of people at once," said Larissa Claar of San Francisco.
Over at Greens Sports Bar on Polk Street, some folks think Chiefs fans are lying low because of last Year's Superbowl. Meet San Francisco’s brothers Curtis.
"They've stolen all the joy from us San Franciscans," said Charlie Curtis.
"I hate the Chiefs. The Chiefs are the worst in many ways," said Jack Curtis.
But the brothers welcome Chiefs fans anyhow.
"We're accepting people as San Franciscans. So, they can come hand out. If I meet them, I'll shake their hand. I'm sure they're great people," said Jack Curtis.
Most folks we met were indifferent.
"I'm a Patriots fan, so I probably don't have the best judgment of both of them," said Tim Lavalle.
Erich Pflumm minces no words, "I don’t care about sports."
So, if you’re going to go watch the Superbowl at a restaurant or a bar or a bar and grill, make sure you get there early. Why? Because there will be no sitting room, there may be no room at all.
