SF community wants hearing over Safeway closure
San Francisco community members want a hearing over a Safeway closure.
SAN FRANCISCO - People in San Francisco's Fillmore district are pressuring city leaders to take action before the closure of the only full service grocery store in the neighborhood.
Advocates met outside the Safeway on Webster Street and Geary Boulevard before marching to City Hall.
Safeway says it'll close this story by Feb. 7 after 40 years of operation.
The chain said it made the decision due to ongoing theft, and concerns about employee and customer safety.
Families say the closure will make things tough for people who simply need a convenient place to buy groceries.
Zerahiah Maull, a young girl who lives nearby, said her family would have to go to a Safeway farther away – one that they couldn't walk to.
Residents hope to see another grocery store replace the Safeway.
