Giants introduce shortstop Willy Adames, signed to 7-year, $182 million contract

Willy Adames and San Francisco finalized a $182 million, seven-year contract on Tuesday, providing the Giants with a power-hitting shortstop in the prime of his career.

It’s a big splash by the Giants’ new-look front office, which is now led by former All-Star catcher Buster Posey, who took over in September after Farhan Zaidi was fired.

The Giants and Posey, the new president of baseball operations, introduced Adames at a press conference Thursday morning.

"I'm just so happy to be here," Adames said.

"Hopefully we can win a few championships like you did," Adames went on to say, referencing Posey and the Giants' championships in the 2010s.

San Francisco has missed the playoffs in each of the last three years, going 80-82 this season.

Adames’ deal is the richest in franchise history, topping a $167 million, nine-year contract that Posey agreed to in 2013.

Adames said he will bring 100% to his new team. "I would say I'm just a competitor. I love winning. I hate losing, obviously. I'm just going to be the same guy every day, try to go out there and be better every day and help my teammates and my team to win."

Adames said he's studied the Giants' roster and sees a team that can play big and win games.

"Obviously, you've got Webb, you got Chappy, you got Tyler on second base now," said Adames. "I think those guys are great. You've got Heliot Ramos, Lee I think he's going to be a superstar. And like the young talent, a lot of strong arms in the bullpen."

Posey gave some insight as to why he made his decision.

"He's a unique connector of people, and that really struck me," said Posey. "Because I think to win championships you have to have personalities like Willy that they're able to identify with everybody in the clubhouse."

The 29-year-old Adames is coming off his best offensive season in the big leagues after hitting .251 with a career-high 32 homers and 112 RBIs with the Milwaukee Brewers. He’s a solid defensive shortstop with a strong arm and good range, though his metrics slipped a little in 2024.

He also has provided consistent power with 150 homers over seven seasons, breaking into the big leagues in 2018 with Tampa Bay and hit 20 homers in his first full season in 2019.

He was traded to the Brewers in 2021 and had one of his best seasons in 2022, slugging 31 homers with 98 RBIs and had a 4.3 WAR.

Adames was signed by Detroit in 2012 as a 16-year-old in the Dominican Republic.

Because Adames turned down a $21.05 million qualifying offer from the Brewers, Milwaukee will get an extra pick after the first round of the amateur draft in July.

San Francisco loses its second- and fifth-round picks for signing Adames and has $1 million cut from its 2025 international signing bonus allocation, dropping it to $4,146,200.
