San Jose police identify susect, victims in fatal officer-involved shooting, double murder

SAN JOSE (KTVU) -- Police on Monday identified the suspect who shot and killed the parents of his ex-girlfriend last week at their San Jose home before responding officers fatally shot the man.

Police said Mirza Tatlic, 24, of Campbell, was shot by San Jose police who had been called to a home in the 1000 block of Laura Ville Lane on May 4. An adult son of Naren Prabhu, 54, and Raynah Prabhu, 53, had called police to report a shooting at the home in the Willow Glen neighborhood, which is located west of Highway 87.

The couple's son told police that his mother, father and 13-year-old brother were in the residence.

When officers arrived, they found the body of the husband in the doorway. Investigators said he had been shot. The man released the couple's teen son but Tatlic refused to surrender, police said. Police said an officer opened fire after he pointed a weapon at the officer.

Police said the couple's daughter had dated the suspect but had ended the relationship last year. Police have said the unidentified woman had taken out a restraining order against Tatlic last year but he showed up Wednesday night at her parents' home. The woman was not home when Tatlic went to the residence, police said.

Police said in a written statement that San Jose police Officer Jacob Morris, who has served on the force for 16 years, fired the gun that killed Tatlic.

Last week, San Jose police Chief Eddie Garcia said the crime was heinous.

"It was just a horrible, horrible crime," Garcia said at a press conference. "A tragic incident perpetrated by evil."

He has been placed on routine administrative leave while the incident is investigated by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and the San Jose Police Department's Homicide Unit, which are conducting a joint criminal investigation.

The case is being monitored by the San Jose Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit, the City Attorney’s Office, and the Office of the Independent Police Auditor, police said.
