San Rafael police shoot man they say was wielding knives
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - San Rafael police shot a man on Sunday who they said was wielding knives and wouldn't put them down.
The man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said in a statement.
Police said the officer-involved shooting was prompted about 9 p.m. on Market Street when a man appeared to be knives in each of his hands and was waving them in "a threatening manner."
Officers said they tried to negotiate with the man to get him to drop the objects, but to no avail. After approximately 30 minutes, he began moving down Verdi Street towards Belvedere Street, where other officers were staged. The officers ordered the man to drop the knives, police said. When he failed to comply, a deputy fired less-than-lethal shotgun rounds at him, but they didn't work, police said. The man then ran in the direction of the deputy. An officer fired his duty handgun at the man, striking him. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. The shooting investigation is being conducted by the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.
