SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. (KTVU) – A Santa Clara University student was charged with attempted murder on Thursday after allegedly stabbing his roommate multiple times inside their dorm room.
Dillon Sang Kim, 19, went before a judge at the Santa Clara County Courthouse, shackled and in a yellow jumpsuit. The sophomore student only looked down as he went before Judge Deborah Ryan.
According to Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Kalila Spain, the victim woke up around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday to find Kim standing over him with a knife. The incident occurred inside Graham Hall at Santa Clara University.
Spain said the victim is lucky to be alive. "The victim was stabbed in the throat," she said. "He started struggling with the defendant. He was cut in the forehead. He was also cut in the shoulder as well."
The victim reportedly ran through a shared bathroom to his suitemate's room, but fell down. He was again stabbed, this time in the upper back. A suitemate soon called 911.
Kim allegedly turned the knife on himself and cut his throat. He was later arrested and treated at the hospital.
Jacqueline Williams, a student who also lives at Graham Hall, said she knows the victim and hopes he makes a full recovery.
"He's the kind of person that's friends with everybody, he's really athletic and super nice," Williams said.
Spain said the victim is recovering at Valley Medical Center and is doing well. Investigators do not have a motive for the attempted murder.
Santa Clara University released a statement to KTVU FOX 2 that in part reads:
"The Office of Student Life, Residence Life, Campus Ministry, Campus Safety Services and the University's counseling center are available to assist students and their families should they have any concerns or questions. The University is cooperating closely with Santa Clara Police Department in an active and ongoing police investigation. The health and welfare of our students is of paramount concern to the University, and we are doing all we can to assist the affected families. There is no ongoing threat."
Kim is being held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 24.
