SFPD officer arrested in Sunset District bank robbery, previously accused in texting scandal

SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - A San Francisco police officer was arrested in connection to a bank robbery in the city's Sunset District late last month, according to the FBI. 

Officer Rain Daugherty, an 18-year veteran, was arrested Tuesday and charged with robbing the East West Bank on Nov. 29, investigators said.

According to an affidavit, Daugherty, 44, of San Francisco, entered the bank and handed the teller a note, demanding money in $50 and $100 denominations. Officials say the robber said something to the effect of “calm down, just do it.” 

Authorities say a second teller pressed the bank's alarm and left the area to notify a bank manager of the robbery.

The robber made off with about $9,000. 

KTVU has previously reported on Daugherty for his role in the SFPD's texting scandal where several officers are accused of sending racist, sexist, homophobic and anti-Semitic text messages in 2011 and 2012.

This past fall the state Supreme Court ruled disciplinary action can move forward against the accused officers in the texting scandal.  

KTVU's Henry Lee reports Daugherty was also charged in July by San Mateo County district attorney with felony elder theft and misdemeanor drug possession and that he's being held without bail at a downtown Oakland jail. He declined an interview request.

According to documents filed with the court, Daugherty is currently under suspension without pay from the SFPD.
