Six injured in overnight San Francisco fire, 20 displaced

SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - Six people were injured, two critically, and 20 people were displaced following a two-alarm fire that ripped through two San Francisco homes just after midnight on Wednesday.

A firefighter was among those injured, but his injuries were minor and he was treated at the hospital and released, according to San Francisco Fire Department Lt. Jonathan Baxter.

Two adults are currently in critical condition and two others suffered serious-to-moderate injuries, Baxter said. The blaze was first reported around 12:18 a.m. The homes are detached, 2-story, single-family homes.

Firefighters arrived on scene and found fire extending from the building and people requesting rescues from the second-floor and other locations of the homes, Baxter said. A total of 23 fire apparatuses and 72 firefighters battled the blaze.

Deputy Chief Mark Gonzales said the fire started in the basement and spread.

"A lot of people are still in shock," said neighbor Julio Zavala, noting that a large family lives in one of the homes.

The fire was placed under control around 1:45 a.m. The American Red Cross came to help those who were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
