SAN JOSE (KTVU) -- A small plane attempting to get airborne rolled off a runway Wednesday morning before crashing through a perimeter fence at a Santa Clara airport, authorities said.
The incident was reported shortly after 10:30 a.m. at Reid-Hillview Airport near Tully Road and south King Road. No injuries were reported during the incident, authorities said. Fire spokesman Capt. Christopher Salcido said two men were in the plane -- a student pilot and his instructor -- when the incident occurred.
The airport is a county owned facility in the eastern part of the county. It is used primarily by small aircrafts for general aviation and air charter operations, according to the airport's website.
Salcido said no vehicles on Tully Road were struck when the plane crashed through the fence. Authorities closed several lanes of Tully Road while crews worked to remove the Cessna 172 single-engine plane. Crews also had to use bolt cutters to remove the plane from the fence.
The flight instructor was identified as Daniel Tupper, 74, who lives near Yosemite. He said he has over 30 years of experience flying planes and he has not been involved in a similar incident before. The identity of the student pilot, 17, was not immediately available.
Tupper said the student was trying to attempt a landing followed by an immediate take-off when the accident occurred. The plane's propeller was damaged during the incident.
