Snoop Dogg covers 'Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay' 57 years after Otis Redding's death
Southern California rap superstar Snoop Dogg and his mentee Jeremy Beloate surprised a live audience with a performance on Tuesday night for The Voice.
Snoop Dogg showed off his rarely seen singing chops alongside Beloate in the show's finale. The pair paid homage to the late Otis Redding on the anniversary of his death by performing his hit, "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay".
Snoop Dogg, given name Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., 53, has been branching out in recent years. Much attention was brought to Broadus Jr.'s friendship with cooking and lifestyle giant Martha Stewart, and the pair dived into a few business ventures together.
Earlier this year, the dynamic duo was hired by NBC as commentators for Olympics coverage in Paris. Broadus Jr. carried the Olympic torch part of the way to its final destination, with a grin on his face the whole time. He also spent time in the pool with Olympic great Michael Phelps, and gave hilarious commentary on the badminton competition.
When did Otis Redding write "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay"?
Redding famously penned the song in August of 1967 while at a dock at the Waldo Point Harbor in Sausalito, according to a report from SFGate.
Redding recorded the song mere days before he died in a plane crash in Wisconsin on Dec 10, 1967. He was 26 years old.
Though Redding did not live to see the song's success, "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay" was a smash, hitting number one on the pop and R&B music charts in 1968.
