Stephen Curry promoting Obama's MBK Alliance with custom shoes on D.C. visit
OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - Warriors superstar Stephen Curry is promoting former President Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance by displaying a special shoe design at Wednesday’s matchup against the Wizards in the nation’s capital.
Curry, who said he has been working with the alliance since their inception four years ago this week, will autograph the customized Curry 4 sneakers and auction them off with all of the proceeds going to support the alliance’s mission.
“The inspiration for the shoe I’ll be playing in today is every boy and young man of color in this country that need to know they matter - to their communities, their country, to me,” Curry wrote on Instagram.
Launched in February 2014, the MBK Alliance seeks to provide an equal opportunity for all young people, regardless of circumstance. The organization focuses on encouraging mentorship and minimizing youth violence with the overarching goal being to improve the lives of boys and young men of color.
The hand-painted sneaker with a white sole and black tongue-area was designed by Dez Customz and Kreative Custom Kicks. The middle strip of the shoe starts white at the front and fades back to black with the MBK Alliance wordmark and circular logo stamped on the ankle. There’s gold accents, including the number “30,” and some script. The words are a quote from Obama at his last MBK National Summit speech as president.
Obama said, in part, "Because ensuring that our young people can go as far as their dreams and hard work will take them is the single most important task that we have as a nation. It is the single most important thing we can do for our country's future."
MBK Alliance is present in 250 communities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. When launched, Obama stated individual communities provide the greatest opportunity for growth within the vision. The organization reports they have provided nearly $1 million in grants across the country since January 2018.
Curry’s unveiling date lands on the team’s lone visit to D.C. this season. And on this trip, the reigning champs did not visit the White House, as their invitation was withdrawn by President Trump in a Tweet last September. They instead spent time with local kids. Look for Curry in his custom kicks Wednesday night at 5:00 p.m.
“A special colorway, supporting a special initiative and a special mission,” Curry said in an Instagram post. “It’s going to be a great night.”
