Storm prompts major flight delays at SFO

OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - Inclement weather has caused major flight delays and dozens of cancelations at San Francisco International Airport Monday, an airport spokesman said.

Flights into and out of SFO are delayed by an average of 45 minutes because of the rainy weather and shifting strong winds, SFO spokesman Doug Yakel said.

By the evening 62 departures and 59 arrivals were canceled at SFO. Early on, many of them were primarily shorter commuter flights along the West Coast, Yakel said.

He said travelers should check with their airline before coming to the airport to confirm the status of their flight.

Some people said they had to cancel their holiday plans due to flight cancelations. SFO officials said by Monday night that only 33 percent of flights both in an out were on time.  

"It tested your patience today. It was awful, said passenger," James Warren. 

Rachel Pechter flew into SFO from the East Coast. She said they were warned weather in the Bay Area was causing delays. 

"It was a shock when they kept making it longer and longer. They'd tease you and you thought it was just going to be an hour and then it was another hour." She said she and her children waited five hours at the airport in New York. 

Mineta San Jose International Airport officials reported delays of up to 20 minutes for some flights.

Oakland International Airport officials said there were no major delays reported at that airport.

Meanwhile, Lake County, the Mill Valley area and the Santa Cruz mountains were getting the heaviest rainfall totals.

KTVU Meteorologist Bill Martin said Monday night will see rain, and that it would be heavy at times.

Lows will be in the mid-50s and west winds will reach around 20 mph.

Tuesday will likely see showers. Highs will be in the lower 60s and west winds will reach 15 to 20 mph.
