PALO ALTO, Calif. - Students from a Palo Alto high school held a rally on Monday calling for stricter gun control following the mass shooting in Florida.
Before classes got started, more than 100 students gathered at Gunn High School for a rally in support of gun control.
The Monday demonstration comes in response to the violence in Florida earlier on Valentine’s Day when a gunman killed 17 people inside Stoneman Douglas High School.
The students who survived the massacre in Parkland, Florida have been leading a call for tougher gun laws -- and students across the country have been following their lead with walkouts and protests.
“We want our voices heard,” Michelle Schwarzwalder said. “We have a say.”
PJ Singh, however, wearing a Make America Great Again, hat said that while he wants to curb violence in school, wanted to focus more attention on mental illness and not gun restrictions.
The students of Gunn High were joined by the Raging Grannies, a group that advocates for social justice.
President Trump is promising the Florida shooting will be the first topic he discusses with the nation's governors -- who are in Washington, D.C., for their annual meeting, which includes arming teachers. California Governor Jerry Brown is not attending.
