Sunshine Cafe in Pleasant Hill celebrates 45 years

A café in Pleasant Hill will mark 45 years in business next month.

The Sunshine Cafe on Oak Park Boulevard is a favorite among locals, who say the small spot has quite a history.

It's been serving up only breakfast and lunch for decades.

The owner, Jesus Diaz, first became a cook at the café, thanks to his dad, who was a longtime dishwasher and bus boy.

The previous owner saw Diaz's dedication and left the café to him after retiring.

He's been serving up breakfasts and lunches for decades.

"All of us are local," customer Pam Miller said. "This is the ‘Cheers’ of Pleasant Hill. It’s our version… and everyone that is in here has come over a 25-to-30-year period of time."

Denise and John Anderson told KTVU that they've been coming in so long, they just sit down without even ordering. Their wait staff knows what they like: Eggs over quick, crispy bacon, hashrowns and an English muffin. The couple even have their own personalized coffee mugs.

All the regulars do.

The staff knows exactly which mugs to grab depending on who walks in including the mayor.

Diaz's family also works at the café and has expanded to have a Mexican restaurant next door.
