Tanker truck crash forces evacuation

A neighborhood in Fremont was forced to evacuate after a tanker truck flipped over and started leaking oil.

A fuel tanker rolled over on a Fremont highway early Friday morning, spewing fuel into a nearby storm drain and retention pond.

HazMat teams arrived at the scene around 4:50 a.m. on northbound Interstate 680, south of Automall Parkway.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash involved the fuel truck and another vehicle, but the tanker truck flipped upside-down.

Tanker truck carrying gasoline tips over

A tanker truck hauling gasoline tipped over on a Fremont Highway on Friday.

The freeway’s northbound lanes are expected to be closed until 5 p.m. as crews work to load the remaining fuel onto another tanker and get the overturned one upright, according to the Fremont Fire Department.

Roughly 100 homes in the surrounding area were evacuated due to the smell of gas.

Oil spews from overturned tanker truck in Fremont
