MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KTVU) - A wildfire that killed one and destroyed 10 structures in Monterey County was 30 percent contained this evening, Cal Fire officials said.
The fire started Saturday at 3 p.m. at Tassajara and Carmel Valley roads and has burned 1,086 acres, according to Cal Fire officials.
Firefighters are now building containment lines, which have been difficult to create because of dead trees and brush and oak trees, according to Cal Fire officials.
Mandatory evacuations are in effect for Tassajara Road from Carmel Valley Road to Cachagua Road, Cal Fire officials said.
An evacuation center has been set up by the American Red Cross at Carmel Middle School at 4380 Carmel Valley Road in Carmel-By-The-Sea, according to Cal Fire officials.
The Monterey County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is handling large animal evacuations, Cal Fire officials said.
The cause of the fire is being investigated, according to Cal Fire officials said.
