SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - There are dueling demonstrations set for Saturday in San Francisco regarding abortion rights.
Pro-life activists will march down Market Street for the 14th annual "Walk for Life West Coast" rally and walk. The event will begin with a rally in the city's Civic Center Plaza at 12:30 p.m. Following the rally, participants will walk down Market Street to Justin Herman Plaza.
Organizers expect 30,000 to 50,000 people. Some of them attended a prayer vigil and mass last night at Saint Dominic’s Catholic Church in the city. The topic was the sanctity of life, starting from the womb.
“It's not just the baby's life, it's the mom's life, it's the dad's life,” said Dolores Meehan, co-founder of Walk for Life West Coast. “It's the sibling's life – everybody's impacted by abortion – and we just don't think that's ok. We're not going to stand by, let that continue, and take it sitting down.”
This walk comes as the senate considers a bill that would ban abortions after 20-weeks of pregnancy, except for cases of rape or incest. Violators would face fines or up to 5 years in prison.
Meanwhile, abortion rights supporters plan a counter protest today. They include members of the San Francisco Democratic Socialists of America.
