Training exercise in East Bay for earthquake response

LIVERMORE, Calif. (KTVU) -- A training exercise took place Sunday in the East Bay to help government agencies with disaster and other emergency responses.

The Civil Air Patrol is an auxiliary unit of the Air Force.

Officials say their members are all volunteers who responded to the call to serve.

The scenario for Sunday's training exercise was a major earthquake hitting the Bay Area.

From Livermore Airport, Civil Air Patrol members were assigned to fly over and take photographs of certain areas, such as the 580 corridor.

The photographs would then be sent to various agencies, to assess if the quake caused any damage to highways, bridges, and other structures.

During Hurricane Katrina, The Civil Air Patrol took aerial photos, and assisted FEMA to evaluate where relief supplies were needed.
