Triple shooting in Rodeo worrisome for neighboring cities
RODEO, Calif. (KTVU) - Three people were hurt when shots rang out early Wednesday morning in Rodeo.
The incident happened around 1 a.m. near Mariposa Avenue and California Street, according to the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office.
Deputies found two women, ages 41 and 45, suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the women was transported to a local hospital by ambulance and the other by helicopter.
A third victim, a 23-year-old man, went to the hospital on his own.
The gunfire left bullet holes in cars and homes. The street was littered with evidence markers.
Police have not provided a possible motive for the incident or suspect information.
The shooting in Rodeo is worrisome to leaders in the neighboring City of Hercules, which has seen an uptick in shots fired calls and the number of guns seized.
Sergeant Joe Vasquez with Hercules Police Department said, "Over the last two months, there has been an increase and it has been noticeable in regards to firearms taken during traffic stops.
Two weeks ago, Hercules Police Corporal Luis Montenegro shot at a suspect after he crashed his car in Rodeo and allegedly pulled a loaded gun from his waistband. The suspect, Reginald Love, wasn't injured and was arrested.
Police recovered the gun they say Love tossed in a yard full of kids' bikes.
"Anytime we locate a firearm within a vehicle or on a person, we like to think that possibly we prevented a future crime associated with that firearm," Vasquez said.
Five days before that incident, Hercules police pulled over Jesus Razo-Villanueva and found an AR-15 assault rifle hidden near his left side.
Police are found a ballistic vest and a high-capacity magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition.
"I haven't seen this in 30 years in Hercules, "said Mayor Dan Romero.
Romero said although it's unclear whether the Rodeo shoot is linked to recent violence in Hercules, officials throughout the region are concerned.
"I'm proud of our police department for being proactive, but now with the shooting that's just occurred, we have to take a bigger step," Romero said.
