The mother of rap artist Tupac Shakur died Monday night at her home in Sausalito, the Marin County Sheriff's Office said today.

Authorities responded to a report of a possible cardiac arrest at her home around 9:34 p.m. Monday. Authorities were called to the houseboat belonging to Afeni Shakur Davis.

Shakur Davis was rushed to an area hospital, where she died. She was 69 years old. She was later pronounced dead due to a cardiac issue. More details on an exact cause of death have not yet been determined.

According to the Marin County Sheriff's Department, a family friend was with Afeni Shakur Davis Monday night, and made the 911 call.

Her son Tupac died in 1996 at the age of 25. He was the victim of a drive-by shooting while in Las Vegas. The murder remains unsolved to this day and no arrest have been made in connection with his killing.

Born Alice Faye Williams, Shakur changed her name as an adult when she became a political activist and joined the Black Panther movement. She was pregnant with Tupac in 1971 and incarcerated while she and other Panthers faced conspiracy charges that were later dismissed.

Shakur was an inspiration for her son's music and oversaw his music catalog and legacy after his death.

Following her son's death, Shakur Davis founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, which provides art programs for young people.

A video from 2Pac.com shows Tupac Shakur being interviewed in 1988.

In the interview he talks about his mom saying, "My mother taught me three things - respect, knowledge (search for knowledge it's an eternal, eternal journey)... and she taught me to not be quiet. To, if there's something in my mind, to speak it. That's what God, that was the breath. But, also to listen. She told me this little joke that God gave you two ears to listen and one mouth to speak. Two ears, and one mouth. Common sense. One mouth you should speak, but you should also listen. And that's where the knowledge comes from, listening. And once you get the knowledge then you can speak, and it helps you. So she taught me respect, knowledge and understanding mostly."

The Marin County Sheriff's Office Coroner will lead the investigation to determine her cause of death.
