Two climbers dead after fall from Yosemite's El Capitan
YOSEMITE, Calif. (KTVU) - Two climbers fell to their death while climbing the Freeblast route on Yosemite's El Capitan Saturday morning, officials said
Park rangers received multiple 911 calls reporting the fall around 8:15 a.m. Yosemite Park Rangers and Search and Rescue staff responded to El Capitan.
The identity of the two climbers and what exactly led to their fall has not yet been released. Park officials said the investigation is ongoing and they will release more information after the climbers families have been notified.
Saturday's announcement came less than two weeks after a hiker fell to his death from the cables of Half Dome inside Yosemite. It was the first fatality on the Half Dome cables sine 2010, officials said.
And last month, world-renowned Bay Area climber Hans Florine had to be rescued after he fell while climbing El Capitan. Safety equipment helped him survive with broken bones in both his left ankle and right heel.
