OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - Ameria Mohammed-Jackson lives on the corner of 26th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard, where a 30-year-old mother, her six-year-old son and his 20-year-old uncle were hit by a driver while crossing the street.
“I saw the black Mercedes coming down and I was like, ‘He’s going awful fast,’” said Mohammed-Jackson.
The Oakland Police Department said the driver of a black Mercedes hit the family in a marked crosswalk at 7:20 Saturday night, killing the woman and her son and seriously injuring the man. The suspect drove off leaving witnesses scrambling to help.
“We called the police and the police came,” said witness Moses Sarmano.
An employee at a laundromat on the corner where the crash happened said the woman is a regular customer and has two other children. The employee said the victim’s husband is understandably devastated.
While the department hasn’t said speed is a factor in this crash, those who live nearby say it’s a major problem in the area.
“It’s always something, every other weekend, somebody is driving down the streets too fast with no lights,” said Mohammad-Jackson.
One woman who didn’t want to be identified said she was hurt recently in the same area because of a car speeding. “I just got off the bus and they turned and hit me,” she said.
As for this most recent incident, the Oakland Police Department is investigating as the community works to come up with solutions.
“We need a stop light on the corner of 26th and Foothill. I will get a signature for everybody in our neighborhood if that’ll help,” said Mohammad-Jackson.
The department said investigators found the car involved in the crash and have identified a suspect but no one is in custody yet.
