Two women killed, child hurt in shooting at Texas A&M Commerce residence hall

Two women are dead and a child was hurt in a shooting in a dorm at Texas A&M in Commerce, which is located about 65 miles northeast of Dallas.

The university’s president said the investigation is still active so he cannot offer many details. Police also aren’t saying much about what happened Monday morning inside the Pride Rock Residence Hall.

Officers responding to a call around 10:15 a.m. found the two women dead from gunshot wounds in a dorm room. There was also an injured 2-year-old child in the room, police said.

The little boy was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.

Police have not said anything about a motive or whether they have identified or found a suspect.

The discovery put the campus on lockdown for several hours Monday. The residence hall was roped off while that happened and students and staff were told to shelter in place.

“It’s kind of scary because I was probably 200 yards from Pride Rock. I had my headphones in,” said sophomore Dillon Hubbard. “I had plenty of people texting me asking me am I OK. It’s something you think would not happen to you but it can have anywhere.”

“At first I thought this is not safe for a campus and having a shooting on campus is very dangerous because everyone is walking everywhere. And then I was like okay this is different,” said Natalie Castillo, a freshman.

All classes and campus activities were canceled through Thursday. The university is also expanding its counseling services to students who need guidance.

The Texas Department of Public Safety’s troopers are helping campus police in the investigation.
