Former CEO, Brian Thompson, killed
The backstory:
Noel being named UnitedHealthcare's new CEO comes after the former head of the company, Thompson, was fatally shot in Manhattan on Dec. 4.
Thompson, 50, who had served as the Fortune 500 company’s CEO since April 2021, was reportedly shot in the back and right calf by a masked man around 6:45 a.m. near W. 54th St. and 6th Avenue outside the Hilton Hotel. Thompson was a married father of two children from Maple Grove, Minnesota. He worked for UnitedHealth Group for 20 years.
Authorities say Luigi Mangione shot and killed Thompson, and he was ultimately arrested inside a Pennsylvania McDonald's after a five-day search. He was carrying a gun that matched the one used in the shooting, a fake ID, and a notebook expressing hostility toward the health insurance industry and especially wealthy executives, according to federal prosecutors.
Mangione, 26, is an Ivy-league graduate from a prominent Maryland family. He was never a UnitedHealthcare client. He recently pleaded not guilty to murder and terror charges in the killing of Thompson.
