US cities with the most affordable rent in 2025

Renting can eat up a large chunk of your income, and that can vary depending on where you live.

The cost of renting a home has risen by more than 50% in the last 10 years, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Wallethub analyzed and compared data across over 180 U.S. cities to determine which had the most affordable rent.

Bismarck, North Dakota is the most affordable

Renters in Bismarck, North Dakota, had the most affordable rent, according to Wallethub.

The median gross rent in the city was about 15.3% of the median annual income. Renters in Miami, Florida, spent more than double that at 33.5% in comparison.

The second-most affordable city for renters was Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where residents’ averaged annual gross rent only costing about 16% of the median income.

In third place was Cheyenne, Wyoming. 

How each city was ranked

Wallethub compared samples of 182 U.S. cities, which included 150 of the most populated cites, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state, using median annual gross rent as a share of the median annual household income.

Wallethub used data from the U.S. Census Bureau to create its ranking.
