CalFire along with U.S. Forest Service have confirmed the death of a firefighter in the Mendocino Complex Fire Monday evening. An investigation is underway as next of kin is being notified.

The firefighter has been identified as 42-year-old Draper Battalion Chief Matthew Burchett. He leaves behind a wife and young son.

According to the Draper City Fire Department, Chief Burchett came to Draper City Fire Department in May of this year. Prior to working for Draper, he worked for Unified Fire Authority for the past 20 years. He had extensive experience in wildland and structure fire.

The fire department posted on its Facebook page, "Our hearts are breaking as we announce the loss of one of Draper City's firefighters in the Mendocino Fire last night. Words cannot explain how it feels to lose a true hero. We sent five of our team members to California to battle these terrible fires. They have worked long, hard hours to help save lives and property."

This comes as the River Fire of the two Mendocino Complex Fires has now reached 100% containment. The River Fire started more than two weeks ago.

The fire is the largest wildfire ever recorded in California -- the Mendocino Complex -- burning north of Sacramento destroyed more than 100 homes.

It remains 48,920 acres. As many as 3,100 personnel are working the fire.

Elsewhere, the two-week-old Carr Fire that killed eight people and burned more than 1,000 homes was at 63 percent containment as of Monday evening.
