Volunteer firefighter who died while fighting Nuns Fire identified

NAPA COUNTY, Calif. (KTVU) - A water tender driver who died while helping to fight the Nuns fire in Napa has been identified as 38-year-old Garrett Paiz, a volunteer firefighter from Missouri.

Paiz was driving a privately owned tanker heading downhill on Monday morning, when it overturned on the Oakville Grade, west of Highway 29 in Napa County.

According to a Cal Fire spokesmen, the water tender overturned and rolled to an upside down position off the grade. 

It's unclear if fatigue played a role in the crash, although authorities are investigating if it could be a factor since crews have been working around the clock.

California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation and the body of firefighter Paiz was escorted from the scene by Napa Sheriff's deputies, Cal Fire,various law enforcement and National Guard units in the area
