SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) -- A 32-year-old woman who was shot and killed on Pier 14 next to the San Francisco Ferry Building in broad daylight on Wednesday has been identified by the medical examiner's office.
San Francisco resident Kathryn Steinle was found suffering from a at least one gunshot wound to her upper torso at about 6:30 p.m. near the Embarcadero and Mission Street in the city's South Beach neighborhood, police said.
Police said the woman was walking with her family when she was shot.
"It was a shooting of a white female. She appeared to be shot in the upper torso and was lying on the ground," said San Francisco Police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfreddi.
Officers found the woman about halfway down the pier, and started CPR. She was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital where she underwent surgery and was pronounced dead around 8 p.m.
Police secured the crime scene and blocked off the Embarcadero. Police said they detained a person of interest in the shooting within 30 minutes, and took him into custody.
Police kept more than 12 witnesses at the scene to get their statements.
Family members say the woman had moved from Pleasanton to San Francisco and was walking with her father, when she suddenly collapsed and said, "oh Dad."
Police say they have no evidence that the victim knew the man taken in for questioning.
The area does have many surveillance cameras and investigators are reviewing the footage for evidence.
Police are urging anyone who might have cellphone video, or anyone in the area who witnessed the shooting to contact them.
