Woman, her unborn infant killed during shooting in San Pablo
SAN PABLO (KTVU) -- Police were searching Tuesday for a suspect after a pregnant woman and her unborn child were fatally shot outside the woman's San Pablo home.
Ilaysia McCoy, 18, of San Pablo was gunned down just six days before her baby shower, police said.
Shots rang out about 8 p.m. Monday near the corner of 17th Street and Sutter Avenue in San Pablo.
San Pablo police found McCoy in the middle of the street. Witnesses said she had been shot once in the chest.
She was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where she died. Sources say she was about seven months pregnant. Doctors performed an emergency C-section, but the unborn baby did not survive.
Police say the shooting appears to be an isolated incident. Police Cmdr. Sid De Jesus would not discuss a motive but said investigators are following up on a number of leads.
Mccoy's family declined to speak to KTVU.
But neighbors are in shock over the killing. Many residents said they heard at least three gunshots and assumed they were fireworks at first.
"Killing a woman, a pregnant woman is something so bad," said Mario Valencia, who lives near where the shooting occured. "Whoever did it should pay."
At seven months, an unborn baby is considered viable, and anyone arrested in the case could potentially face double murder charges.
