Work on Richmond-San Rafael Bridge delayed

Forecasted rain this week is delaying permanent repair work on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.

Work was set to begin at 9 p.m. Sunday and last until about 4 a.m. Monday.

Now, a  Caltrans' contractor will begin to replace the expansion joint on the bridge during the week of Feb. 18.

Drivers can expect a smoother ride over the expansion joint due tto the replacement work, Caltrans officials said.

Work is planned for ten overnight work shifts. All work is anticipated to be completed within two weeks after the start date. One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction during the work.

Caltrans engineers made some temporary fixes to the bridge Friday night.

Concrete fell on the bridge's lower deck on Thursday and the bridge was closed much of the day, snarling traffic around the North Bay and East Bay.

A six-foot steel plate was initially installed as a temporary repair. On Friday night, engineers replaced it with an eight-foot plate to better protect the deck and improve the ride for drivers, Caltrans officials said.

The bridge is safe and open to the public.
