Southwest launched nonstop service from Oakland to Hawaii for the first time Sunday morning.
OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - Southwest Airlines launched its first nonstop service between Oakland and Honolulu on Sunday morning.
The flight headed for Honolulu left Oakland just after 11 a.m. There was a lot of excitement about the first southwest flight, especially after the airline put tickets on sale at just $49 one-way. But those quickly sold out.
Next month Southwest will offer flights between Oakland and Maui and it will begin flying between Mineta San Jose and Hawaii early in May.
Before the flight departs Oakland, there will be a traditional Hawaiian blessing of the aircraft and a ceremonial water arch.
