The CHP now says two people - a young girl and a middle-aged woman - were shot while driving on Interstate 80 near Willow Avenue in Hercules Saturday night.

CHP Officer John Fransen said on Sunday he is not sure if  they were innocent victims or targets. "We are investigating that." But he did say that this was a case of "isolated road rage."

The girl, who is either 5 or 6, and the woman, who is in her 50s, were both passengers in the car that was shot at shortly after 9 p.m.

The man driving the car was unhurt and drove them to Kaiser hospital in Vallejo. He gave a statement to investigators, but the CHP is not releasing any information about possible suspects or a motive yet.

The freeway was closed more than four hours and re-opened shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday.

Fransen said these road rage shootings are completely "unacceptable." He said he can't believe that drivers who feel "so slighted" on the road, and then act on their desire to fire a gun, is totally "ridiculous."
