Oakland Roots want to build stadium at Howard Terminal
OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland Roots have expressed interest in building a permanent stadium at Howard Terminal.
Howard Terminal was the same site where the Oakland Athletics wanted to build their new ballpark before they scrapped plans and left the city altogether.
The Oakland Roots and Soul Sports Club announced Thursday that it has submitted a proposal to the Port Authority, which controls the Howard Terminal site, outlining plans for a permanent soccer stadium.
"This moment demonstrates our commitment to building a stadium in Oakland," said Club President Lindsay Barenz. "We believe that our success at the Oakland Coliseum in 2025 will showcase why this Club deserves a world-class stadium to call home, one that proudly represents our City to the world."
The Roots plan to build the soccer stadium in two phases. The first phase would involve a "modular stadium" that can be constructed and operational in a short timeframe and accommodate 15,000 fans. The second phase would involve the construction of a larger facility that can fit up to 25,000 fans.
The club said there are ongoing discussions about the Roots remaining at the Coliseum beyond 2025, and it is a possibility.
