New law caps security deposits at one month's rent

Several new laws are taking effect in California this month, and one of them caps how much landlords can charge for security deposits to just one month's rent. Until now, the typical requirement for these deposits could be as high as three month's rent. Small mom and pop landlords that own up to four units are exempt from the law. It also does not protect tenants from damages that exceed the deposited amount. Addressing the opioid crisis in California

The number of opioid-related deaths in the Bay Area is on the rise. Data from the California Department of Public Health shows that San Francisco County had 489 500 opioid-related overdoses in 2023. Alameda County reported 299, while Santa Clara County reported 207 in the same time period. Sonara Health, a company focusing on treating opioid addiction, developed an app and QR code to make finding take-home methadone treatments, easier.
