Better weather on Thursday helped the battle against a huge California wildfire threatening communities around Lake Tahoe, but fire commanders warned firefighters to be prepared for ongoing dangers.

Hell came to Greenville, an historic Plumas County gold rush era town 80 miles northeast of Paradise. "We lost Greenville tonight," U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa, who represents the area, said in an emotional Facebook video. "There’s just no words."

Video shows a hotel, bar, gas station and many other buildings in Greenville, Plumas County, burned to the ground.

The blaze, dubbed the River Fire, erupted around 3:32 p.m. at the Bear River campground near Colfax, according to Cal Fire. The fire has pushed into neighboring Nevada County.
