Native American Heritage Month: Bay Area Indigenous history
For more than 10,000 years, indigenous peoples have called the Bay Area home. Long before San Francisco existed, the region was occupied by the Ohlone family of tribes who lived off of and maintained the land for centuries. The lives of indigenous people in the area were disrupted in 1776 with the arrival of Spanish military and civilian settlers. By 1810, disease, forced labor, and religious indoctrination devasted the Ohlone way of life, adding to a long history of colonization and harm to indigenous peoples throughout what would become the United States. During this National Native American Heritage Month, KTVU's Greg Lee speaks with Aurora Mamea from the Native American Health Center about the roots of indigenous people and culture here in the Bay Area.
