New law caps security deposits at one month's rent

Several new laws are taking effect in California this month, and one of them caps how much landlords can charge for security deposits to just one month's rent. Until now, the typical requirement for these deposits could be as high as three month's rent. Small mom and pop landlords that own up to four units are exempt from the law. It also does not protect tenants from damages that exceed the deposited amount. Shanti Singh, the legislative and communications director at Tenants Together, joined us on 'The Nine' for more insight.
